Faversham Stoa is a philosophy discussion group meeting on the 3rd Tuesday of every month from 7.30 to 9.30pm in the The Bull in Tanners Street. We cover a large range of topics. Even before Darwin had published a word various writers, philosophers and biologists had already started trying to apply notions like evolution, natural selection and survival of the fittest to society and culture in general – taking these ideas way outside the original sphere of biology. It remains a matter of profound controversy about how far evolutionary ideas can be applied outside biology. Indeed it is arguable that where human society is concerned Larmarkian ideas of positive, intentional adaptation are more applicable than the process of natural selection.
